Mali Borakebougou field example

The first natural hydrogen producing field in the world.

  • Hydrogen is found in at multiple levels, sandstone reservoir with dolerite intrusions as seals or baffles

  • Archean & Proterozoic basement granites with through-going faults to surface

  • H2 source not proven, most likely candidate is ultramafics within the Archean and Proterozoic basement

  • Gas flowing from wells is 98% H2

  • Flow rates ~ 1400 m3 / day for the discovery well

  • Equivalent of ~20 mmscf/year

  • Well is only 112m deep

  • Well produced for 5 years without long-term depletion (apparently), but anecdotally well was shut-in occasionally to build pressure

  • Subsequent drilling - 20 wells, 18 successful
